Weight loss is big business these days. There are so many weight loss programs on the market today, it is difficult to choose one that will work. How can we know what is good and what is just hype? With society as a whole being heavier and heavier, it is time to look at a variety of ways to lose weight and figure out what is going to help with health and wholeness.

There are so many different choices in the arena of loosing pounds, it is hard to get started. Does meeting with others and talking about the challenges help you? There are groups for that. Maybe counting calories or points is what gets you motivated, well those programs are out there too. How about a company that provides phone support and online access plus has a whole food line to make choices easy? That’s out there too. A motivated person can find just the right program.

For many people, taking a pill or a few pills for a weight management program sounds like a dream. If only it were so easy. Truly, while there may be some pills out there that help curb your appetite or help burn fat faster, the best way to lose weight is to work at it slowly. Getting a new perspective on what food is for helps many people to start the process of healthier eating. Using food only as a means to fuel the body, not as a means for pleasure or satisfying emotional needs is a great beginning. That is not to say thin people don’t enjoy eating – they do, but thin people tend to be able to quit eating when they are satisfied physically. Those of us who are heavier tend to eat until the pleasure centers of our brains are satisfied.

Taking extra vitamins and minerals is a necessary part of eating healthy. Today, our food supply is not as full of nutrition as it was long ago. Along with less nutrient dense food we have more sedentary lifestyles, making it difficult to maintain a healthy weight. Good quality vitamins can help.

So, how do you change the thinking? Well, finding the right program for your personality and body type is key. If you feel good on a higher protein diet, then that is probably a diet that you can sustain. If you don’t feel so good on high protein, but just lowering fat and sugars works, then that will help give the motivation you need to keep up the weight loss. Another approach is eating more whole grains and less processed foods. All of these methods have helped people with their weight management goals.

One key fact is the nutrients in our food sources today. Eating a diet of organic fruits and vegetables can have a big impact on managing weight. The nutrients in mass produced produce are just not the same as those that are grown without pesticides and sprays and genetic engineering. A return to organic farming is seeing a resurgence in better eating. Organically raised meats are also available in many communities, making it easier to get back to a healthful way of eating.

A good exercise program is one more way to get started losing weight. Weight training, cardiovascular training and resistance training are all excellent ways to make sure your body is moving and utilizing the nutrition that you are putting into the body. There are a variety of ways to get great exercise, but probably the easiest thing for most people is just getting outside to walk. A brisk thirty minute walk will get the heart pumping. Add some wrist weights and pump the arms to get that resistance and a little workout for the arms.

The companies who claim to provide the key to weight loss programs are making a lot of money. Unfortunately, they aren’t all good programs. Most people who want to lose weight did not gain it in a short amount of time. Losing that same weight will take longer than a few weeks or months. Losing weight takes the desire to get it off, the dedication to an appropriate program and a commitment to exercise.
