HPH launches initiative to transform delivery of care inHawai‘i
Moving into the public phase of a multi-year strategy, Hawai‘iPacific Health has begun a statewide initiative designed to achievea fundamental change in the way health care is delivered inHawai‘i.
The health system is this month launching a series of communityroundtable meetings, a new website and a multi-media campaign toeducate the community on “Changing Health Care in Hawai‘i.” Theinitiative is focused on an innovative model of care that increasesquality while slowing the rate of growth in health carecosts.
The Changing Health Care in Hawai‘i initiative views the Provider,the Insurer and the Individual as collaborators in health. Threecomponents are central to the initiative’s success:
1) Providers focus on disease prevention, chronic diseasemanagement and overall patient wellness;
2) Insurer reimbursements are based on quality and positiveoutcomes versus the traditional fee-for-service model, which paysproviders strictly for the number of visits or services theyprovide;
3) Individuals take personal responsibility for their health.
To help achieve this, seven years ago Hawai‘i Pacific Healthinvested in Epic, an EMR system that links its entirenetwork.
EMR adoption has laid the foundation for Hawai‘i Pacific Health’snew HealthAdvantage program. Under this strategic new direction,health care professionals use technology to proactively providecare through a wellness and prevention-based approach that focuseson making sure patients receive all their recommended care.

Oceanit’s HFDS is the world’s fastest hostile fire detectionsystem. Using a novel sensor chip that operates at more than 10,000frames per second, this next-generation system can be deployed onmultiple platforms such as vehicles and aircraft. Developed atOceanit’s Kauai office, HFDS is based on leading-edge infraredfocal plane technology that can detect a gunshot in one-tenth ofsecond, and immediately display on a clock like screen thedirection of the gun fire, e.g., fire at 5 o’clock, +10 degreeelevation. HFDS provides 360 degree battlespace coverage from asingle sensor — with an accuracy of better than ? degree in azimuthand elevation. By using a proprietary weapons detection algorithm,HFDS can detect the difference between an M16, AK47, or a RocketPropelled Grenade, which would greatly enhance battlefieldintelligence and provide real-time information essential to supportour ground troops.
